St Joseph

St Joseph

St Joseph was the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus. He was a carpenter, who taught Jesus the same trade. He is called a 'righteous man' in the Gospel of Matthew.

When Mary was told she would have the Son of God, the angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream and told him he should go ahead with his marriage to Mary.

Joseph is sometimes called 'the dreamer' as he had four divinely inspired dreams. 'He did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.' (Matthew 1:24)

In honour of Joseph's role in caring for and protecting Jesus, as well as raising him in the Jewish faith, Mary refers to Joseph being Jesus' father in Luke's Gospel (Luke 2:48-49).

The Solemnity of St Joseph is celebrated on 19th March.
