WHAT WE WILL BE DOING AT SCHOOL THIS YEAR        

 

An overview of some of the work being carried out in Year 1 during the

Autumn term

The topics are ‘Finding Ourselves’ and ‘Our World’.

In R.E. our topics are:

Families

  • We will explore the love and care shown in our families and reveal how God loves and cares for every family.

Belonging

  • We will explore belonging to different groups and reveal that Baptism is an invitation to belong to God’s family.

Waiting

  • We will explore the times that it is necessary to wait and reveal that Advent is a time of waiting to celebrate Jesus’ coming at Christmas.

Judaism

  • We will explore the stories of Abraham and Moses and how God led the Jewish people.

Hinduism

  • We will discuss the importance of shared stories and how they bring people together. We will do this through the stories of Ganesha, Krishna and Rakhi.

 

In English we will be working on:

Writing

  • Writing in standard English
  • Joining sentences using conjunctions
  • Showing where the nouns are in sentences
  • Reading our writing out aloud
  • Writing sentences using capital letters and full stops
  • Leaving spaces between words
  • Adding new words in our writing (adjectives and adverbs)

In Science we will be working on:

  • Identifying, naming, drawing and labelling the basic parts of the human body and saying which part of the body is associated with each sense.
  • Learning about the four different seasons and observing what Grays is like during autumn. We will also observe and describe the weather associated with the seasons and how the day length varies.
  • Asking simple questions
  • Identifying and naming a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Identifying and naming a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and describing and comparing the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets).

In Computing we will be:

  • Switch on and off a laptop

In Design and Technology we will be working on:

In Music we will be working on:

  • Identifying Low and High pitch sounds
  • Recognising and exploring how sounds can be made and changed
  • Making different sounds with our voice
  • Using our voice to make loud and quiet sounds
  • Using instruments to explore texture and timbre
  • Moving in time with the music
  • Singing songs as part of a group
  • Clapping a short rhythmic pattern and melodic pattern in simple time
  • Recognising and repeating a simple repeated rhythmic pattern using long and short notes

 

In P.E we will be working on:

  • Moving fluently, changing direction and speed easily without collision.
  • Describing what it feels like when breathing faster during exercise.
  • Watching movements of others carefully.
  • Using space to their advantage.
  • Getting in line with the ball to receive.
  • Using simple dance vocabulary to describe movement.
  • Copying and exploring basic body actions demonstrated by the teacher.
  • Knowing where their heart is and why it beats faster.

Special People

  • We will explore the special people in our lives who are there to help and reveal that at church we meet people who do special jobs as we gather to celebrate the Good News of Jesus.

 

Meals

  • We will explore families and groups sharing special meals and reveal that at Mass we share Jesus’ special meal.

Change

  • We will explore how we change and grow and reveal that Lent is a time to change in preparation for the celebration of Easter.

 

In English we will be working on:

In R.E. our topics are:

Holidays and Holydays

  • We will explore the idea that Holidays are days to be happy and reveal that Pentecost is a Holy Day – the feast of the Holy Spirit.

Being Sorry

  • We will explore that we have choices and that sometimes we choose well and sometimes wrongly. We will then reveal that God helps us to choose well and to be sorry and that he forgives us.

Neighbours

  • We will explore that we have neighbours all around us and reveal that everyone is our neighbour and is loved by God.

 

 

In English we will be working on:

 

  • Writing a sequence of sentences to form a narrative and non-narrative text
  • Using a full stop and a capital letter for people, places, days of the week and I
  • Using a question mark and exclamation mark
  • Spelling common exception words and sounds from our Read, Write Inc band correctly
  • Spelling words with the suffixes –ed, -ing, -er, -est
  • Spelling words with the prefix un-
  • Using the spelling rule for adding –s as the plural maker
