WHAT WE WILL BE DOING AT SCHOOL THIS YEAR        

AUTUMN TERM

An overview of some of the work being carried out in Year 1 during the Autumn term.  The topics are ‘Finding Ourselves’ and ‘Our World’.

In R.E. our topics are:

Families

  • We will explore the love and care shown in our families and reveal how God loves and cares for every family.

Belonging

  • We will explore belonging to different groups and reveal that Baptism is an invitation to belong to God’s family.

Waiting

  • We will explore the times that it is necessary to wait and reveal that Advent is a time of waiting to celebrate Jesus’ coming at Christmas.

Judaism

  • We will explore the stories of Abraham and Moses and how God led the Jewish people.

Hinduism

  • We will discuss the importance of shared stories and how they bring people together. We will do this through the stories of Ganesh, Krishna and Rakhi.

In RE we will be working on:

  • Retelling religious stories from Scripture, identifying people and places
  • Using some religious words and phrases, in context.
  • Beginning to describe some religious symbols and the steps involved in religious actions and worship, including the celebration of the Sacraments, e.g. A Baptism.

 

In line with Government expectation, we have implemented a recovery curriculum containing key elements of the Reception curriculum to be taught alongside Year 1 objectives.

 

In English we will be working on:

  • Identifying and naming a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Identifying and naming a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and describing and comparing the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets).

 

In Computing we will be working on:

  • Computing systems and networks: improving mouse skills
  • To log in and out of a computer
  • Clicking and dragging skills

Using tools to create a story and self-portrait Online Safety:

 

  • To know what the internet is and how to use if safely
  • To understand how the internet can affect our emotions
  • To understand how to treat others, both online and in-person
  • To understand the term ‘digital footprint’ and the importance of being careful about what we post and share online

 

In Geography we will be working on:

  • Using observational skills to study the geography of the school and its grounds
  • Using maps to locate where I live in the local area
  • Identifying daily weather patterns in the UK
  • Using simple compass directions

 

In History we will be working on:

  • Answering questions based on an artefact or picture
  • Identifying objects from the past
  • Recognising that some people in history have made our lives better today
  • Ordering up to three events in chronological order
  • Explaining how we have changed since we were born

In Art we will be working on:

  • Drawing using pencils
  • Drawing from direct observation and imagination
  • Drawing lines of different shapes and thickness

In Design and Technology we will be working on:

In Music we will be working on:

  • Identifying low and high pitch sounds
  • Recognising and exploring how sounds can be made and changed

  • Clapping a short rhythmic pattern and melodic pattern in simple time
  • Recognising and repeating a simple repeated rhythmic pattern using long and short notes

In P.E we will be working on:

  • Describing what it feels like when breathing faster during exercise.

These attitudes and dispositions will be taught through a mixture of specific lessons and across the curriculum.

 

In PSHE we will be working on:

  • Knowing that I belong to a community, feeling safe and content within my class
  • Feeling good about my strengths.
  • Knowing some more ways to calm myself down when I feel scared or upset.
  • Understanding others’ feelings
  • Knowing some ways to solve a problem.
  • Knowing what bullying is, what to do if I am bullied and who I can talk to about it.

 

SPRING TERM

An overview of some of the work being carried out in Year 1 during the Spring Term. The topics for the term are ‘Toys’ and ‘My World’.

 

In R.E. our topics are:

Special People

  • We will explore the special people in our lives who are there to help and reveal that at church we meet people who do special jobs as we gather to celebrate the Good News of Jesus.

Meals

  • We will explore families and groups sharing special meals and reveal that at Mass we share Jesus’ special meal.

Change

  • We will explore how we change and grow and reveal that Lent is a time to change in preparation for the celebration of Easter.

In RE we will be working on:

  • Retelling what they know about key figures in the history of the people of God and people in the local, national and universal Church.
  • Beginning to describe how people act in a particular way because of their beliefs and to describe some of the actions and choices that arise because of these beliefs.
  • Beginning to describe different roles of some people in the local, national and universal Church.
  • Beginning to describe key characters and events, in simple stories from scripture.

In Geography we will be working on:

  • Identifying daily weather patterns in the UK
  • Using observational skills and asking and responding to questions
  • Describing and locating cold areas of the world in relation to the North and South Poles

 

In History we will be working on:

  • Identifying objects from the past
  • Asking and answering questions about old and new objects
  • Identifying the difference between old and new objects
  • Using measurements of time such as old, new and long time ago

 

In Art we will be working on:

  • Identifying the names of all the Primary and Secondary colours
  • Holding and using a brush correctly
  • Recording and exploring ideas from first-hand observations
  • Working from direct observation and imagination
  • Looking at the work of other artists

 

In Design and Technology we will be working on:

  • Explaining what I want to do and thinking of some ideas independently
  • Making simple plans

In Music we will be working on:

  • Following musical instructions e.g. fast, slow, loud, quiet
  • Recognising and repeating a rhythmic pattern

  • Responding to different moods in music

 

In P.E we will be working on:

  • Making up and performing simple movement phrases.
  • Linking and performing basic gymnastic actions.
  • Performing movements with some control and accuracy.
  • Performing simple gymnastic movements (jump, roll, travel, climb, still).
  • Using space safely, being aware of others and apparatus.
  • Carrying apparatus safely, with guidance.

In R.E. our topics are:

Holidays and Holydays

  • We will explore the idea that Holidays are days to be happy and reveal that Pentecost is a Holy Day – the feast of the Holy Spirit.

Being Sorry

  • We will explore that we have choices and that sometimes we choose well and sometimes wrongly. We will then reveal that God helps us to choose well and to be sorry and that he forgives us.

Neighbours

  • We will explore that we have neighbours all around us and reveal that everyone is our neighbour and is loved by God.

In RE we will be working on:

  • Retelling what they know about people in the local, national and universal Church and key figures in the history of the people of God
  • Beginning to recognise signs and symbols
  • Describing how people act in a particular way because of their beliefs
  • Saying what they wonder about
  • Recognising that some questions are difficult to answer and asking questions about their own and others’ feelings, experiences and things that matter to them

  • Using basic geographical vocabulary to refer to key physical and human features

  • Naming and locating the world’s seven continents and five oceans

 

In History we will be working on:

  • Identifying objects from the past and explaining what it was used for
  • Recognising that we celebrate certain events because of what happened in the past
  • Becoming aware that stories and objects belong to the past
  • Spotting old and new things in a picture

 

In Art we will be working on:

  • Printing using simple patterns by using objects such as vegetables, fruits, sponges
  • Creating a repeating pattern
  • Printing onto paper and textile
  • Cutting using scissors and tearing paper and card for collages
  • Using a simple painting program to create a picture
  • Adding texture using tools
  • Making different kind of shapes
  • Cutting, rolling and coiling materials such as clay, dough and plasticine

 

In Design and Technology we will be working on:

  • Describing how different textures feel
  • Grouping and sorting fabrics and threads
  • Creating weavings using a range of materials
  • Cutting food safely and describing the texture
  • Washing hands and making sure surfaces are clean

 

In Music we will be working on:

  • Using our voice in different ways
  • Making and copying a sequence of sounds using untuned instruments
  • Saying whether we like or dislike a piece of music and explaining why

 

In P.E we will be working on:

  • Rolling, throwing, striking, and kicking with some control.
  • Knowing how to aim and hit into a good space.
  • Explaining why running and playing games is good for them.
  • Mastering basic movements including running, jumping, throwing, and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and coordination.
  • Using and changing skills to win games
